World Youth Day, Sydney 2008

Opening Mass in Sydney

with 3 comments

We celebrated the opening Mass for World Youth Day in Sydney yesterday with 140,000 young people attending from around the world.  What a beautiful celebration it was!  I was particularly moved by the testimonies of young persons who had experienced earlier world youth days in different parts of the world.  They explained that their lives changed because of those experiences with the pope and thousands of young Catholics from around the world.  Some of them are now happily married with children, some priests, others religious, and all commited Catholics.

Some 2,000 priests helped distribute Holy Communion to the faithful at Mass, while some 400 bishops from diverse parts of the world concelebrated.  It was a moving, powerful, spiritual experience – even for a young bishop!

Keep us in your prayers!

  1. I am very moved by the story you share of the mass and testimonies of so many youth. As a mother and one who works in youth ministry, it gives me much hope to know that the lives of so many youth around the world have been touched and transformed by this experience. I will continue to pray for you and the pilgrims. Keep us in your prayers.

  2. Thank you for sharing and helping us to stay united with our youth of San Antonio and from around the world. May the youth attending this World Youth Day be nourished at the table of the Eucharist and at the table of sharing with other youth from around the world so that their faith may be strengthened and they can be dynamic participants in their church communities. We are thinking of all of you and keeping you in our prayers! Many the Lord’s blessings continue!

  3. Watching the opening Mass was very moving. It was so exciting to see all of the young adults so excited for their faith. May the Holy Spirit continue to move in a special way among the pilgrims; and may they bring the excitement and fervor home to their parishes in order to continue to spread the fire of His love.
